About Us

Radio Station KCHS took to the airwaves in Truth or Consequences (Hot Springs at that time) in 1946 with used transmitter and equipment.

It operated under a progression of owners until December, 1965, when it was purchased from Rex Tynes of Las Vegas, Nevada by the Bairdland Broadcasting Corporation with Neil R. Baird, Sr. as principal owner and manager, his wife Myrna, all the while by his side.

In March 1977 KCHS became the first AM station in the nation using no vacuum tubes in its equipment. An all-solid-state transmitter, recording devices and supporting equipment were installed to establish a landmark in commercial AM broadcasting using all-solid-state equipment during that time.

On March 2, 1967 the first issue of the Sierra County Sentinel was published by the Baird Family, under the Bairdland Broadcasting Corporation.

When first established, the Sierra County Sentinel published 1,000 copies weekly and continued to a circulation of 4,000 in 1979. Currently 4,500 copies are printed each week, and online subscriptions are also available.

The station operated under Baird ownership for more than 35 years. Neil passed away and Myrna remarried G. Patrick Kohs and the two operated the station under GPKMedia.com, which it remains today. Myrna passed away in 2011 and Pat has since retired. Daughter, Frances (Baird) Luna now carries on the family tradition and the station has since added FM simulcasting and on-line streaming. The station was once operated from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and now runs 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, 365 days a year.

Since its beginning, the Sierra County Sentinel has strived to give its readers unbiased news coverage. On January 1, 2019 the Sentinel became Sierra County’s only newspaper, providing coverage in print and online.
