In 2008, we debated about the future with dreams of space. We were told lots of things, including Richard Branson’s promise that if we built the Spaceport, he would launch himself into space from here.

This poor community joined in Branson’s dream of space, and we voted to raise our taxes to build Spaceport America.

15 years of public corruption at the Spaceport. No economic benefit to this community of any note. The Spaceport is built, but we continue to pay the tax. We lost the Recreation Center and afternoon games of badminton. Many stopped believing. Just another “pie in the sky.”

Then we all heard the announcement, the launch of Richard Branson was scheduled.

On July 11, 2021, I stood out in the desert with hundreds of others in view of “Spaceport America in Truth or Consequences” to watch and participate with hope and then cheers as Virgin Galactic launched Richard Branson into space and safely returned to “Spaceport America in Truth or Consequences.” It was spectacular!

Thank you, Sir Richard Branson, for keeping your word: you remained a tenant and launched yourself into space from the Spaceport we paid for and built.

I know I was not the only person looking up to the sky who voted yes in 2008 with a great sense of pride. We shared in the same dream and put our tax money toward progress. We Made This Happen.

Congratulations, Sir Richard Branson and the people of Truth or Consequences.

Dreams do come true.
