A Truth or Consequences man reported that he had cashed a cashier’s check for a female friend of his, only to have the amount withdrawn from his account, as it was determined the check was a fake.

The man told T-or-C Police Officer Vega that he cashed the check for his friend, Renate Osterholt, 50, of T-or-C, because she didn’t have a bank or any money. He was later notified the check was forged or altered and charged his personal account for the $1,950, plus $10 processing fee.

According to charges filed in Sierra County Magistrate Court against Osterholt, the man later learned that she had stolen one of his personal checks, signed his name and cashed it for $550.

Charges of forgery and fraud, both fourth degree felonies, have subsequently been filed against Osterholt, who now awaits a court date in the Sierra County Magistrate Court.
