Gathering for a special meeting Tuesday morning, January 12, Sierra County Commissioners attended to a sole agenda item, the appointment of a new county representative to fill a vacant seat on the New Mexico Spaceport Tax District Authority.
This vacancy was created when former commissioner Frances Luna’s termed out of the board’s District-Three seat at the end of 2020. Luna formerly served as chair for the tax district authority. Commission vice-chair Travis Day presently holds the county’s other representative seat and after noting the upcoming January 21 meeting of the spaceport tax district authority would include vital discussions, suggested the presence of full representation from the county would be advisable.
Commission chairman James Paxon said he would be interested in filling the vacant representative seat and with this, Day entered a motion to appoint him to the post. Seconded by commissioner Hank Hopkins, the motion was then duly approved by an unanimous vote.
