With as many as 100,000 people visiting the lake during holiday weekends, Elephant Butte Lake has become one of the biggest fishing and recreational attractions in New Mexico. FARMING heavily supports Sierra County's economy. The Rio Grande river valley provides a rich agricultural environment that has flourished for hundreds of years. DAIRY production and ranching are another major part of New Mexico and Sierra County. As in the past, the clean, honest lifestyle afforded by these industries still attracts people looking for the "simpler way of life" today.

RETIREMENT - or a place where you can enjoy these visions painted by Mother Nature - either way they are a common reason for people settling in Sierra County. Probably one of the most dynamic features of the region are the world renown sunsets. In addition to the fact that nothing soothes the soul better than this site, a large variety of area artists enjoy the challenge of seeing if they can match Mother Nature's talents.
